Manufacturing Engineer

A minimum of 3 years of experience is required for this position and applicants should have demonstrated experience with manufacturing of laboratory or medical systems that consist of multiple electro-mechanical and fluidic assemblies.

The Manufacturing Engineer will join our Operations team to ensure delivery of our existing protein analysis instrument and help introduce new products. The candidate will apply working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and systems engineering principles to transition new products from R&D to Manufacturing and then ultimately to our contract manufacturing partner. The position will work closely with the product engineering team on the development and testing of design improvements while also improving assembly, testing, and qualification processes. A qualified candidate will have hands-on experience in building instrumentation products. The candidate will have the ability to thoroughly understand the product design and the required manufacturing processes as well as develop procedures to ship high-quality products. Previous experience in life science is not required but is strongly preferred.

*We have plans to relocate to Boxborough, MA. Occasional travel to our contract manufacturing partner and suppliers will be required. No relocation assistance is available with this position.

Minimum Qualifications (must have):

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
  • At least 3 years of commercial experience in developing life science equipment.
  • Proficiency in SOLIDWORKS required for performing product design changes and as a team member working alongside engineering during NPI.
  • Geometric dimensioning and tolerance experience with tolerance stack-up analysis.
  • Knowledge of various materials used in production design (e.g. machined components, plastics and sheet metal) in order to make proper design decisions.
  • Knowledge of various manufacturing processes (injection molding, machining, sheet metal) so as to develop designs capable of being fabricated utilizing these processes.
  • Experience interfacing directly with outside vendors and/or design firms.
  • Strong hands-on mechanical and bench skills, with ability to perform and document detail-oriented work
  • Prior experience using production control process and documentation systems with a firm recognition of their importance in producing high quality products.
  • Managing and participating in design reviews, assembly, testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Performing formal product verification, including writing and executing protocols and generating reports.
  • Ability to design for manufacturability and serviceability.
  • Adept at planning, prioritizing, multi-tasking, organizing and following through, while remaining highly energetic and focused.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with high proficiency in Excel and Office products.
  • Willingness to travel for contract manufacturing support (20%).

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience in life science medical or instrumentation products combining fluidic, opto-mechanical, gas handling, and motion control core technologies.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and make repairs on electronic assemblies.
  • Experience in designing and executing product reliability testing at the subassembly and system level.
  • Resourceful, flexible, and willing to work hands-on in developing novel technologies and executing program deliverables.
